Tea Ceremony x Incense Workshop
Event Date: 24 November 2025
Event Location: The Education University of Hong Kong (Tai Po Campus)
The Tea and Incense Appreciation Workshop brings together the experience of fragrance and the art of tea tasting, with a focus on sensory refinement and the development of emotional intelligence. Incense appreciation is far more than a pleasant olfactory experience; it is a discipline of subtle perception.
By learning to attend to delicate shifts in scent, atmosphere, and inner response, participants develop the perceptiveness and emotional self-regulation that are vital qualities for modern managers.
In this workshop, students learn to pair natural incense materials, including agarwood and sandalwood, with different types of tea, exploring how fragrance reveals its layered character through changes in time and temperature.
This practice is centered on developing non-verbal communication skills and emotional intelligence. In today’s high-pressure leadership environments, the ability to remain calm and perceptive is essential. The incense practice of indirect heating demands stillness and care: excessive heat causes the fragrance to turn burnt and harsh, while insufficient heat prevents its subtle aroma from emerging.
Through this precise attention to minute changes, students learn to regulate restless emotions, sharpen their sensitivity, and build the psychological space needed for composed and thoughtful leadership.
Through the appreciation of incense and tea, students learn to attune themselves to subtle environmental cues, such as the gradual fading of fragrance or the changing depth and texture of a tea infusion. This cultivated sensitivity, when translated into interpersonal communication, enables leaders to perceive more keenly the emotional fluctuations and unspoken needs of their team members.
Rather than relying on forceful language or overt authority, leaders are encouraged to foster emotional resonance and guide their teams with empathy, awareness, and emotional intelligence. In this way, the workshop helps students centre the mind and transform delicate sensory experiences into meaningful capacities for emotional understanding and interpersonal communication.
